Shakira holds a Bachelor of Music (Performance) with Honours from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, The University of Melbourne, majoring in Classical Voice.
Shakira is the proud recipient of the Joseph Sambrook Opera Scholarship 2016 with the esteemed Melba Opera Trust and holds a position in Victorian Opera’s Developing Artist program.
In 2016, Shakira made her Melbourne Symphony Orchestra debut as the soloist in Herrmann's The Storm Cloud Cantata in Hitchcock and Herrmann, conducted by Benjamin Northey.
Further concert highlights include: Soloist in Saint-Saens' Christmas Oratorio, Ravel's Shéhérazade, Lenthall’s Calls of War, Handel’s Messiah and solo recitals with Austral Salon.
Earlier in the year, Shakira made her professional principal debut in Victorian Opera's production of Lucia di Lammemoor in the role of Alisa, alongside soprano Jessica Pratt. Further roles with Victorian Opera include; Dorothée in Massenet’s Cendrillon, Mum in Victorian Opera's The Grumpiest Boy in the World, Ensemble in Victorian Opera's ANZAC celebration Remembrance and most recently Ministrel in Laughter and Tears (featuring I Pagliacci).
Additional performance highlights to date include; The title role in Carmen in the Caves performing along side Australian tenor David Hobson, Snow White in Gordon Kerry's Snow White and Other Grimm Tales, Consoler in Victorian Opera’s The Play of Herod, Edith in The Pirates of Penzance and Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady.
Shakira was a finalist in the 2016 Opera Scholar of the Year competition performing at the annual Opera in the Alps and Opera in the Market events with Greta Bradman. For 2015/2016, Shakira held the inaugural Peter Evans Scholarship with Opera Scholars Australia.
In 2017, Shakira performed in the chorus for Opera Australia in their production of King Roger and appeared as Cuckoo in Victorian Operas production of The Sleeping Beauty. She debuted the role of Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte with the Mediterranean Opera Studio (Italy).
In 2018, Shakira began the year performing in Victorian Opera’s The Magic Pudding and tours the Inaugural By the Light of the Moon for Opera Australia in the lead role of Cat.
Shakira was announced the Acclaim Awards Scholarship recipient 2017 which enables her to study in Italy later in 2018.
