Australian baritone Barry Ryan OAM graduated with honours from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. His many awards for singing include the Shell Aria, the New York Metropolitan Auditions, the Marten Bequest for Singing, the Vienna State Opera Award and the Green Room Award. In 2013, Barry Ryan received an Order of Australia for his services to classical music.
Barry has performed with Europe’s leading opera companies including the Royal Opera Covent Garden (including tours to Israel and Sicily), La Scala Milan, the Opera Comique in Paris, the Paris Opera Bastille, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, the Flemish Opera Antwerp, the Komische Oper Berlin, Basel Opera and the Otono Festival Opera Madrid. He was a principal artist with the Cologne Opera from 1988 to 1992.
Making his Australian opera debut in 1993, Barry has since performed for Opera Australia, Wide Open Opera Dublin, Opera Queensland, Victorian Opera, West Australian Opera and Canterbury Opera. His leading roles include the title role of Nixon in Nixon in China, George Milton in the Australian Premiere of Of Mice and Men, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Gunther in Götterdämmerung, Marcello in La Bohème, Count di Luna in Il Trovatore, Renato in Un Ballo in Maschera, Amonasro in Aida, the Father in Hänsel and Gretel, Pizzarro in Fidelio, Mister Redburn in Billy Budd, the Gamekeeper in Rusalka and Tonio in I Pagliacci. His world premieres include Scully in The Riders, for which he won a Greenroom Award, Alex in Bliss, for which he was nominated for a Helpmann Award, Prosecuting Counsel in Lindy, Wiebbe Hayes in Batavia and Barney in The Summer of the 17th Doll. Barry created the role of Sam in Cloudstreet for State Opera South Australia in 2016, and joined the cast of Pecan Summer as McGuigan in their Sydney Season.
In 2017, Barry appears as Forrester in Cunning Little Vixen for Victorian Opera and performs Sharpless in Opera Australia’s Madam Butterfly. He also performs Wintereisse for the Sydney Schubert Society.
Barry has performed in concert throughout Europe, Australia and Asia and has been seen in televised performances of opera in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Australia. He has performed on radio for the BBC London, the ABC in Australia, the WDR in Germany, Norwegian Radio and Radio Tokyo. He has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Norwegian Symphony Orchestra and all the major Symphony Orchestras in Australasia.
Barry has performed under the batons of some of the world’s leading conductors, including, Riccardo Muti, Zubin Metha, Sir Charles Mackerras, Simone Young, Richard Bonynge, Carlo Felice Cillario and Richard Hickox.
Recent concerts include: Jochanaan in Salome, Robert Schumann's Liederkreis; Franz Schubert's Winterreise and Vaughan Williams' Songs of Travel, all with Sydney Conservatorium Orchestra; Mahler's Lieder eines Fahrenden Gesellen with Australian Youth Orchestra; The Pilgrim’s Progress with Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra; Beethoven's 9th Symphony with the Shinsei Nihon Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and Sydney Conservatorium Youth Orchestra.
